This month we would like to turn the focus on Fatima LaGrow. Not only is she the wife of Keith LaGrow, and the Vice President of LaGrow Irrigation, but she is also an avid exercise enthusiast! We are very proud of her accomplishments and want to know how she does it all.
Q. What does it mean to be an exercise enthusiast?
A. I enjoy fitness in all forms, weightlifting, running, dancing! But dancing is probably my favorite! I really enjoy anything I can do to stay active and moving!
Q. You teach a Zumba class at the YMCA, how did you get started with that?
A. Well actually, I am a Personal Trainer, and Fitness Instructor at the YMCA, and this includes teaching Zumba classes. Zumba ties in with my love of dance, and if you've never tried it, you really should! It's a lot of fun, and great exercise! As a Personal Trainer, I get to work with people from all walks of life, from the elderly to young athletes. The youngest I've worked with is 13 years old!
Q. Have you always been interested in fitness?
A. Yes! I've been interested in fitness all my life! I've always loved being active and healthy. I even played on my middle school's basketball team! I started running when I was younger, and about 7 years ago I started competing in 5Ks!
Q. How many 5K's have you participated in, and how did you do in these events?
A. Oh wow, I've done so many! probably about 100 more or less, including training runs! I've done well in them, but it's always been about achieving my personal best! One 5K that I participated in, The Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot at Highlands Hammock, I won the 35-39 class in 24:27.8!
Q. What role does nutrition play in your fitness regimen?
A. Nutrition is very important! I would say it's at least 80% of my fitness regimen. I believe that nutrition must be combined with exercise in order to achieve optimum results. You can exercise all you want, but you won't have the results you desire unless you make sure to have adequate nutrition to nourish your body.
Q. What is your favorite "go to" meal before a workout?
A. My favorite "go to" meal is, at least 45 minutes to an hour before my workout, I like to have a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries or blueberries! Oatmeal is good source of fiber and great for energy! Eggs are also a favorite of mine, as they are an excellent source of protein, and when you are working out, you need to make sure you are feeding your body enough protein! Protein is the fuel your muscles need for recovery and growth, and this is especially important after you work out. Everyone has different body types and different workouts will have different nutritional needs. For a more personalized workout plan, individuals might want to work with a Personal Trainer or a nutritionist.
Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us and share a little bit about yourself!
